After months of inactivity owing to the war and the Summer break starting the Saturday outings again was a highly-anticipated news, as regulars and newcomers to the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem eagerly waited for it.
The feeling was mutual for the dominican friars and professors present on last Saturday to introduce the rich history of this place that has hosted the École since 1890. The fifth century basilica’s byzantine mosaics, the tale of protomartyr Steven’s lapidation, the photo library, the library 460,000 books strong, the archeology museum, and the office of the digital and interdisciplinary research program of the Bible in its traditions, visitors became familiar with the three dimensions of this extraordinary site: archeological, religious, and academic.
Initially created by fr. Marcel SIGRIST, o.p., as convivial times to gather and discover the treasures of the Holy Land, the Saturday outings are still opportunities to meet people and families living in Jerusalem and its surroundings.
