Born on 13 August 1955 in Modena (Italy), fr. Paolo Garuti was ordained a priest in Modena, Italy, after joining the Dominican Order in 1976.
After classical studies, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 1985 and a canonical licence in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. He studied at the École Biblique in Jerusalem and obtained a Doctorate in Biblical Sciences in 1993, after which he taught in Bologna, Rome and Jerusalem. His thesis on the Epistle to the Hebrews (“Alle origini dell’omiletica cristiana: La lettera agli Ebrei: Analisi stilistico-argomentativa”), directed by Br. Marie-Emile Boismard, was awarded the distinction “very honourable”.
Ordinary Professor at the Faculty of Theology of the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (Angelicum), he regularly came to Jerusalem as a visiting professor at the EBAF. His areas of specialization were: New Testament (Epistles); Ancient Rhetoric; Bible and the Greco-Roman World.
Since 2015 he has been in charge of the collections published by the EBAF with Peeters: Études bibliques and Cahiers de la Revue biblique.
Fr. Paolo Garuti was prior of the Convent of St. Stephen in Jerusalem from January 1995 to May 2000. He played a decisive role in the programme of renovation and modernisation of our library.
His funeral will take place on Saturday 25 February 2023 in the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna where he is also to be buried.
